Google Glass · Explorer Edition & Enterprise Edition 2

Your phone, on your glasses.

GlassMate revives Google Glass as a hands-free heads-up display for a whole suite of phone apps. Say a phrase, the right app spins up and streams its HUD to the glasses — then drive it by voice while it runs. Radio, live TV, YouTube, Spotify, trains, weather, the web and more.

The solution

One companion. Two devices. A suite of glass apps.

GlassMate is a phone companion plus a small on-glass runtime that, together, turn Google Glass into a generic, voice-driven display. Each app keeps its real work on the phone — the glasses become a pure heads-up I/O surface. Apps are installed and updated over the air; new ones drop in without touching the glasses.

📱

The companion

Runs on your phone. Hosts the command registry every app advertises, dispatches voice triggers to the right app, mirrors notifications, and provides shared platform services.

🥽

The on-glass runtime

GlassMate + MirageReceiver on the glasses listen for voice, render the streamed HUD, and recognise in-cast commands on-device — no per-app glass software needed.

🧩

The app suite

Ten phone apps — and counting — each advertising how it can be summoned and what it understands while casting. Install just the ones you want from the companion's Apps tab.

How it works

Two voice channels

Every interaction is either summoning an app from the glass launcher, or talking to an app that's already casting. They use different paths.

1

Summon — start a cast

You speak a phrase on the glasses. The launcher matches it against the companion's command registry, finds the owning app and fires it. The app brings up its cast and streams a HUD. One-shot per cast.

🗣️ voice trigger→ glass launcher→ companion→ phone app→ HUD on glass
2

In-cast voice — control it live

While a cast is live, the glasses run on-device speech recognition for the small vocabulary that app registered. Matches are delivered straight to the app — no cloud round-trip. Touchpad gestures work too.

🗣️ on-glass recognizer→ app's vocabulary→ phone app reacts→ HUD updates
Arguments in parentheses. A summon phrase can carry one free-form argument spoken at the very end, e.g. search on youtube (jazz cats) or find a train to (brussels). Apps that take one are marked below.
“close session” & the touchpad. Every casting app understands close session — it ends the cast exactly like a swipe-down on the glass touchpad. A tap usually means play/pause or “read this”; swipe forward/back navigates.
Hardware

Built for both Google Glass generations

The same companion and app suite drive either headset. The companion detects which one you have and adapts the install and UI automatically.

XE

Explorer Edition

The original Google Glass (model “Glass 1”, Android 4.x / GDK). Voice triggers are collected through the system recognizer; its OEM launcher stays in place.

EE2

Enterprise Edition 2

Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 (Android 8.1). Adds a generic on-glass launcher, runtime permission flows and a wake gesture; the richer of the two targets.

Get started

Bootstrap in four steps

The companion ships a first-run wizard that does the whole setup over a single USB-C cable, then hands off to over-the-air installs.

Connect by USB

Plug the glasses into the phone and enable USB debugging. The companion talks ADB directly over the cable — no desktop needed.

Pair over Bluetooth

The wizard reads the glasses' address and creates the bond for you. One confirmation tap and the secure backbone between phone and glasses is live.

Install the on-glass runtime

GlassMate, the launcher and MirageReceiver are pushed onto the glasses over the warm USB link.

Add the apps you want

Open Settings → Apps in the companion and install or update any phone app over the air. Each tile links straight to its entry on this page.

Platform

Built-in, beyond the apps

The companion also provides shared services that any glass session can use — no extra install.

💬

Ask anything

Free-form questions answered by Gemini and spoken back — on the glass speaker, or your earbuds when they're connected.

🔴

Live

A continuous Gemini Live conversation with low-latency audio, streamed to the glasses.

🧭

Navigation

Turn-by-turn directions rendered on the HUD while you keep your eyes up.

🌍

Live translation

Speak, and hear or read the translation — language pairs picked in the setup wizard.

👤

Contacts & calling

Look up a contact or reach a favourite by voice.

🔔

Notifications

Your phone's notifications mirrored to the glasses, filterable per app.

📷

Camera

Capture a photo through the glass camera straight to the phone.

📶

Wi-Fi provisioning

Push Wi-Fi credentials to the glasses from the companion so casting can promote to fast TCP.
